Trying Times & Protective Psalm Prayers ☁️
You see it. I see it. We see it.
There’s a lot going on in the world right now. And you know what they say... “As above, so below.”
To me, this speaks to the connection between the physical and spiritual realms. If, like me, you believe that things take shape spiritually before they become physical, this is a good time to deepen your spiritual practice and keep a few powerful prayers close to your heart.
Prayer gives us somewhere to bring our fears, our hopes, and the things we don’t quite have words for. It’s a way to ask for protection over ourselves and our families, find our footing, and remember that we don’t have to carry everything alone.
Below are a few prayers from the Book of Psalms, along with ways you might turn to them in your own practice. Memorize a verse, save a passage, or read one slowly when you need a moment of connection. You don’t have to know every word by heart for it to mean something.
Psalm 1
For grounding, discernment, and staying rooted in your faith when surrounded by harmful influences.
1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
Psalm 53
For reflecting on your faith, seeking God, and remembering the hope of restoration.
1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.
2 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God.
3 Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
4 Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread: they have not called upon God.
5 There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath despised them.
6 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! When God bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.
Psalm 126
For holding on to hope through sorrow and making room for joy again.
1 When the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.
2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them.
3 The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.
4 Turn again our captivity, O Lord, as the streams in the south.
5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
6 He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.
Psalm 91
For seeking protection and reassurance whenever, however, or wherever you feel afraid or the energy around you feels heavy.
1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
Psalm 70
For calling on God’s help when you feel vulnerable. Personally, I love to say this one before going to sleep.
1 Make haste, O God, to deliver me; make haste to help me, O Lord.
2 Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul: let them be turned backward, and put to confusion, that desire my hurt.
3 Let them be turned back for a reward of their shame that say, Aha, aha.
4 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.
5 But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O Lord, make no tarrying.
This prayer soothes me. It helps me feel protected and reminds me that the spirit of God is ever present, even as I settle into rest.
No matter what happens in the world over the coming years, commit yourself to spiritual practices that help you feel rooted, connected, and supported. Give yourself moments of quiet. Pray in your own words, too. Let yourself be honest about what’s on your heart.
You don’t have to have it all figured out to nurture your faith. Sometimes, all you have is “God, help me,” and that’s a place to begin.
Take care of yourself, look after the people you love, and remember that Spirit is always within you and around you.
XOXO.
